Moon Phase Lab

Problem: This lab did not have a problem or a question to ask but rather the point of this lab was to get us more familiar with the phases of the moon, how the moon moves and why it moves that way.

Hypothesis: Prior to this lab I knew that the moon rotates around the earth which is also rotating on its own. I knew the direction of the rotation of the moon but I expected to learn what the moon will look like during different times of the month and year.

Procedure: Simulate the phases the Moon passes through each month with a bright light source and a medium sized ball.

Data and Calculations: Can be found on our group’s hardcopy of the lab.

Conclusion: This lab really cleared up my understanding of how the shadow of the moon is cast. I knew that the moon always faces us from the same side but this lab helped me understand what position the sun, moon and earth have to be in relation to each other to cast different shadows throughout the month. My aha moments came from learning what causes an eclipse and the biggest thing I learned from this lab is the ordering of the phases as far as which side is illuminated at different times of the month and what different phases and quarters are called.
